HAPPY LEAP YEAR FEBRUARY 2016!

We are moving along beautifully in our Snowbird Season and it is just great to have everyone back in Orange Acres.

February will be another exciting month in the park with many activities. First on the list is our now famous Soup, Salad and Sandwich Potluck Dinner on Thursday, February 4 hosted by Barb Brown (thank you Peggy Killinger for introducing this a few years ago). Next is the Flea Market on Saturday, February 13 with Ramona Armstrong and her team leading the way. Beginning on Thursday, February 11, the Community Centre will be transformed into "Flea Market Central." Our next very special event is the 50th Anniversary Party hosted by Jane Betts and her committee on Thursday, February 18.  We have four Orange Acres couples celebrating 50 years of marriage - CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! Next the ladies of the park will enjoy the Ladies Spring Tea on Monday, February 22 presented by our little British hostess Rosemarie Shinde and her committee.

January 3The mixed golf league will be moving from Tuesdays to Thursdays beginning Thursday, February 4. Our regular activities continue with Tuesday coffee meetings and of course donuts, regular exercise both indoor and pool, computer ipad classes, shuffleboard, billiards, bridge and other card games, Sequence every Monday evening and Bingo every Wednesday evening.

So why do we have a leap year? It was the ancient Egyptians who first figured out that the solar year and the man-made calendar year did not always match up. That is because it actually takes the Earth a little longer than a year to travel around the Sun - 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds, to be exact. Therefore, as the hours accumulated over the centuries, an extra day was occasionally added to the calendar, and over time the practice became more or less official. The Romans first designated February 29 as leap day, but a more precise formula (still in use today) was adopted in the 19th century when the Gregorian calendar fine-tuned the calculations to include a leap day in years only divisible by four - 2016, 2020, 2024, etc. Another stipulation ruled that no year divisible by 100 would have a leap year, except if it was divisible by 400. Thus, 1900 was NOT a leap year . . . but 2000 WAS!  Go figure. Thankfully, all this intricate plotting will continue to keep us in tune with the seasons over the next several thousand years.

Thank you Lynne Butler for sharing another beautiful photograph.

ENJOY THE EXTRA DAY THIS MONTH!
